If you and your preschoolers are feeling a little stir crazy from dreary winter weather, there are two things to look forward to - Spring is just a few weeks a way and there are plenty of fun, free, kid-friendly activities around Raleigh this February to get you out of the house.
Our 5-star child care center in Raleigh knows it can be hard to find the time to actually research local events, so we did some of the work for you with a round up of activities and events that the whole family will enjoy!
Discovery Table: Wizened Woodchucks & Weather Predictors
Where: Yates Mill County Park; 4620 Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh
When: February 1-3, 2020; 8:30 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.
Head to the Finley Center at Yates Mill County Park and learn more about Groundhog day at the Discovery Table: Wizened Woodchucks and Weather Predictors. You and your family will get to learn how animals were used to predict the weather way before we had weather apps on our phones. Make a pop-up woodchuck puppet, check out how to make your own weather equipment at home, and more!
Blue Jay Point Winter Open House
Where: Blue Jay Point County Park; 3200 Pleasant Union Church Road, Raleigh
When: February 1, 2020; 1:00 - 4:00 P.M.
Blue Jay Point County Park is hosting a Winter Open House so you can get to see what the park has to offer and meet the staff! There are refreshments, crafts and games, live animals, and plenty of activities to take part in as well as exhibits from community organizations.
Also, they are transforming a part of the park into Collection Central - all kinds of organizations will be collecting, including:
- Pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House
- Clean plastic jars and bottle caps for Girl Scouts
- Eye glasses for Lions Club
- Box Tops for Education
There is also a food and essentials drive for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC.
Groundhog Day
Where: NC Museum of Natural Sciences; 11 W. Jones St. Raleigh
When: February 2, 2020; 12:00 - 4:00 P.M.
Join Sir Walter Wally the Groundhog and see if Raleigh will have an early spring or six more weeks of winter at this year's Shadow Ceremony at Bicentennial Plaza. In addition to this, there will also be exhibits about groundhogs, kids can learn about hibernation and spring, and see presentations with live animals.
Counting is for the Birds
Where: Blue Jay Point County Park; 3200 Pleasant Union Church Road, Raleigh
When: February 17, 2020; 10:00 - 11:00 A.M.
Visit Blue Jay Point for their Family Wildlife Series, Counting is for the Birds. Your kids can listen to stories, enjoy activities, and count how many different birds they can spot right from Blue Jay's front porch. Plus, your family will learn how to make a bird feeder to take home!
Park Tales: The Six Swans
Where: Yates Mill County Park; 4620 Lake Wheeler Rd, Raleigh
When: February 26, 2020; 11:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
Visit Yates Mill County Park for their Park Tales and listen to the story of The Six Swans, one of Grimm's Fairy Tales, in which a princess must save her brothers while under a curse. After the story, kids will learn about swans and make a swan craft to take home. The event is free, but you do have to register as there is limited space in the classroom.
